Former Twitter Engineers Bring Particle’s Smart News Reader to the Web

Particle, the AI-powered newsreader developed by former Twitter engineers, has expanded its reach by launching a web version of its platform. Previously available only as a mobile app, Particle now offers users access to AI-generated news summaries and interactive features directly through their browsers.

What Is Particle?

Particle is designed to help readers quickly grasp the essence of news stories by providing concise summaries. Beyond simple bullet points, the platform extracts key quotes and offers “entity pages” that provide background information on people, organizations, or topics mentioned in the news. For instance, clicking on terms like “NASA” or “Bitcoin” within a summary leads to pages with relevant details and related stories.

AI Features and Publisher Collaboration

While the mobile app includes an AI chatbot for user queries, the web version currently displays previously asked questions and answers without direct interaction. Importantly, Particle emphasizes collaboration with publishers rather than replacing them. The platform includes direct links to original articles from sources like Reuters, Fortune, and AFP, aiming to drive traffic back to these publishers. Early tests indicated that users often clicked through to full articles, supporting the platform’s publisher-friendly approach.

Expanding Access and User Experience

The web launch allows users without the mobile app to access Particle’s features. Shared links from the app now lead to dedicated web pages, broadening the platform’s accessibility. Users can explore various news categories, including Technology, Sports, Entertainment, Politics, Science, Crime, Economics, and Video Games, directly from the homepage.

Looking Ahead

Founded in 2023 by Sara Beykpour and Marcel Molina, Particle has secured $4.4 million in seed funding and a $10.9 million Series A led by Lightspeed. As the platform continues to evolve, it aims to balance AI-driven news summarization with support for traditional publishers, offering readers a comprehensive and efficient way to stay informed.
